I majored in journalism, professional writing and communications, but I would say about 95% of what I know about journalism comes from doing it. The best way to train the next generation of reporters to break free of the wretched hive is by offering internships and mentoring. Just the News takes on interns, and if a fledgling reporter approached me for advice and guidance, I'd happily offer it. A couple decades ago, I was planning a career in academia, but the more independent my thinking became, the less I fit in with that world. I was a teaching assistant for a while, though, and it was a lot of fun.
